Depending on the fonts you pick, no matter the copywriting, you will affect the following indicators:

  • Sales
  • Conversions
  • Shares
  • Cool factor
  • Returning visitors

If you think that any font will work, you are wrong.

Here is why.

How fonts affect your website

Fonts are the “text design” and all websites are made out of texts. At least a part of them.

Because of that I highly recommend you consider fonts a separate part of your website design and not just “fonts”.

You should work (or the designer you hired) on this part (fonts part) as long as you work for other parts of your website (logo design, page design, functionalities, contact page, and so on).

Visitors are reading less than you might think, they usually just quickly scan the website.

And decide.

If they will continue the scan, if they will buy from you, subscribe to your newsletter, and so on.

So what they see very fast are the fonts, not what is written.

They will notice instantly if you use small texts, hard to read fonts, weird fonts, or a font they never saw before.

To avoid picking fonts that will ruin your website, stay with me a few more minutes.

You will find some smart ideas.

What fonts should you use

I am close to 36 and I personally created over 20 websites by myself and I paid for 7-8 websites (over $35k).

So I can say that a have a bit of experience with websites.

First, I wasn’t offering too much attention to the fonts I were using for websites.

Don’t get me wrong, I respected the basics but that was all.

Up until a point.

That happened when I changed the fonts for a blog of mine and after 1 month, all the metrics improved with close to 20%. The replacement of 2 fonts (headings and paragraphs) were the unique change I made.

Nothing more.

No new magic content, no ads, no nothing.

In that moment I realized the importance of fonts in websites and how a very simple font change can drastically improve the performance of a website.

So what fonts should you use?

Here are 6 tips from my very own experience:

Look who is your audience – If your audience are senior people with a reputable age, use large font sizes. You will help them big time.

The Chinese government is asking blog owners to make this change. If a government understood this, you should be at least 1 step ahead.

Standard fonts

By standard fonts I mean the most popular fonts – Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Helvetica, etc.

If you don’t have time to make a lot of tests, or money to spend on better fonts, stick with the standard fonts.

Your website will do fine. But fine is better than terrible.

Tests, tests, tests

Do lots of tests.

If Microsoft is asking for the whole world opinion about the new fonts they will use in the Office suite, you can do it too, on a smaller level.

Ask your customers or blog readers what fonts they like most.

Let them vote, make a poll, etc.

You will find a way to collect their opinions and answers.

Take your time, don’t rush the tests.

Check your competition and the biggest websites in the world

See what fonts are they using.

If you see a font that you like, identify it for free with WhatFontIs.

After that you can try it on your website.

This is the way I found some very cool fonts for my projects (2 landing pages).

Similar fonts

If you like very much a font but it is expensive and you don’t want to spend too much on the font, use this service for free and find out similar fonts with the one you like.

When using website builders and website themes

If possible, install your own fonts and don’t use the fonts that are included in the website builder or website themes.

You want to stand out of the crowd and fonts as I said already, play a major role in your website design.

Conclusions

Pay respect to fonts and they will always reward you.
