Which font identifier finds the right font family? For this comparison, we used ten font samples exclusively from MyFonts. We took screenshots of the previews in the first ten listings on its Bestsellers page and submitted the same images to WhatTheFont and WhatFontIs.<\/em><\/p>\n

WhatFontIs can identify over 1.2 million commercial and free fonts from foundries worldwide, without being limited to a single foundry or marketplace.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We kept this test focused on MyFonts: we did not add samples sourced from Adobe Fonts, DaFont or Google Fonts. All ten test images came from MyFonts’ own previews.<\/p>\n

WhatFontIs returned the target family in the top five for all ten images; WhatTheFont did so for seven.<\/p>\n

Test conducted by the WhatFontIs team on 3 September 2026. Ten test images, with Gotham appearing in two separate listings. Results are scored by font family, regardless of weight or style.<\/small><\/p>\n

The goal was to identify the family.<\/strong> A result can count even if it is Bold, Italic, another weight or a variable version of the target family. The language extensions accepted in this test are listed in the methodology and named in the results table.<\/p>\n

Both tools had five first-place matches under the scoring rule below. WhatFontIs returned the target family within the first few results more often, with the largest difference on Phill and the two Gotham samples.<\/p>\n

What stood out<\/h2>\n

Gotham: found in both samples by WhatFontIs<\/h3>\n

Gotham appeared twice in the first ten MyFonts listings, once as Gotham Variable and once as Gotham Complete Family. WhatTheFont did not return a Gotham match in the inspected results for either image. Suggestions included 1955 Light, Codec Pro News and Nominee Light. WhatFontIs returned Gotham Book at #2 for the first sample and #1 for the second.<\/p>\n

Phill: the top listing on the day of the test<\/h3>\n

Phill occupied the first position in the MyFonts Bestsellers capture from 3 September 2026. WhatTheFont suggested Segment B Type, Tusker Grotesk and Pressio, but no Phill match appeared in the inspected results. WhatFontIs returned Phill Compressed Light at #1 and Phill Compressed Regular at #3.<\/p>\n

Where WhatTheFont ranked the family higher<\/h3>\n

WhatTheFont placed Gilroy and Hanley Pro at #1, compared with #2 and #4 on WhatFontIs. For Hanley Pro, WhatFontIs listed three Thirsty Script results before returning Hanley Pro Script Alt. For Gilroy, its first suggestion was Minimalistic, followed by Gilroy Regular.<\/p>\n

WhatTheFont also ranked the accepted Neue Helvetica result higher: #2 versus #3 under the scoring rule described above. Both tools returned Helvetica Now and Neue Haas Grotesk Display at #1.<\/p>\n

Avenir and Avenir Next<\/h3>\n

Both tools returned Avenir Next at #1. For the Avenir sample, WhatTheFont returned Avenir Arabic Roman at #4, while WhatFontIs returned Avenir Arabic Regular at #2. Both are accepted Avenir-family matches in this test. Avenir and Avenir Next are scored as separate target families.<\/p>\n

How we tested<\/h2>\n

We chose the first ten listings on the MyFonts Bestsellers page<\/a> as captured on 3 September 2026. MyFonts describes this page as a ranking of the previous month’s top-selling fonts, updated hourly. The captured list fixes the selection for this test.<\/p>\n

This gave us a selection from MyFonts’ own storefront rather than a list drawn from the WhatFontIs catalogue. Being sold on MyFonts does not, by itself, establish whether a font is indexed by WhatTheFont.<\/p>\n

  1. Image source:<\/strong> we took screenshots of the word \u201cAbrupt\u201d displayed in the font previews on MyFonts, with black text on a white background. The test images were saved as JPGs.<\/li>\n
  2. Same input:<\/strong> we submitted the same saved image to both tools for each sample.<\/li>\n
  3. Tool settings:<\/strong> we used default settings, without manually adjusting the crop inside either tool or correcting the detected characters. We used no account and opened a fresh browser session for each image.<\/li>\n
  4. Evaluation:<\/strong> we recorded the position of the first accepted family match in the returned list. We inspected 82 results per query on WhatTheFont and 60 on WhatFontIs. \u201cNot found\u201d means absent from those inspected results.<\/li>\n
  5. Date:<\/strong> both tools were tested on 3 September 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What counts as a match?<\/h3>\n

    A match identifies the target font family, regardless of weight or style.<\/strong> A Bold or Italic result can count for a Regular sample, as can another weight, width or variable version within the target family. Matching the precise style is outside the scope of this comparison.<\/p>\n

    The accepted language extensions in this test are Avenir Arabic for Avenir, and Neue Helvetica Arabic or Neue Helvetica Georgian for Neue Helvetica. These are treated as family matches for both tools. A result from another family does not count simply because it looks similar: Helvetica Now does not count for Neue Helvetica, Avenir Next does not count for Avenir, and Thirsty Script does not count for Hanley Pro. The separate handling of .Helvetica NeueUI<\/code> is documented beneath the results table.<\/p>\n

      There are ten images representing nine target families. We kept both Gotham entries because both appeared in the first ten listings. Each image receives equal weight, so Gotham contributes two of the ten observations.<\/p>\n

      Conclusion<\/h2>\n

      WhatFontIs returned the target font family in the top five for all ten images, compared with seven for WhatTheFont.<\/strong> It also returned the target family in the top three for nine of the ten images, compared with six for WhatTheFont. Both tools had five accepted matches at #1.<\/p>\n

      The main difference was whether the target family appeared within the first few results. WhatFontIs returned Phill and Gotham in the top two; neither family appeared in the inspected WhatTheFont results for those three images. WhatTheFont ranked the accepted family match higher for Gilroy, Hanley Pro and Neue Helvetica.<\/p>\n

      This is a small comparison conducted by the WhatFontIs team using one short word from ten MyFonts listing previews. It measures family identification on these particular screenshots. It does not establish an overall accuracy rate across other fonts, words, photographs or image conditions. Results may change as the services are updated.<\/p>\n
