Imagine you ship a game update on Friday\u2026 and on Monday you find out the fonts inside your build just became 52\u00d7 more expensive<\/strong>. That\u2019s not a thought experiment. It hit a large chunk of Japanese game developers recently, and it\u2019s a useful warning for anyone who ships products with fonts baked in\u2014apps, websites, brand systems, packaging, ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happened: Fontworks, Monotype, and a 5,200% jump<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fontworks<\/strong> (Tokyo) ended its long-running LETS (Leading Edge Type Solution) subscription in late November 2025. For many studios, LETS was the \u201csane\u201d way to license high-quality Japanese fonts: about \u00a560,000\/year<\/strong> (roughly $380<\/strong>) for commercial use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The replacement offer\u2014managed under Monotype\u2014landed like a hammer: about $20,500\/year<\/strong>, plus a 25,000-user cap per application<\/strong>. If you publish a mobile title with any momentum, that cap can disappear in a weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This didn\u2019t come out of nowhere. In 2023, Monotype acquired Fontworks<\/strong> and gradually moved services toward a global subscription model. That approach can be \u201cfine\u201d for Western-language projects where there are countless alternatives. Japanese typography is different: each family needs coverage across thousands of kanji (plus hiragana and katakana), which makes production slower, harder, and expensive\u2014so affordable substitutes aren\u2019t always available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why you should care even if you don\u2019t ship in Japan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t only a Japan story. It\u2019s a signal about where font licensing is trending: fewer companies controlling more type IP, and subscription models that can change quickly. When ownership consolidates, pricing power concentrates<\/strong>\u2014and the shock eventually reaches everyone, not just one market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, demand keeps expanding. More creators, more products, more UI, more marketing assets\u2014more fonts everywhere. That pressure is exactly why more people actively look for \u201csafe\u201d licensing options and fallback families, rather than building a product around a single foundry\u2019s terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real cost of ignoring font licensing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
