Both fonts have a long history and both represent great options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People struggle to decide which one should they use in different situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because both fonts look great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And no matter how many people you will ask about what type of font to use, serif or sans-serif, you cannot find a clear answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To understand why this “battle” exists and to decide a winner, we need to have all the information on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let’s start with Serif fonts.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that, we continue with Sans-serif fonts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, we will compare the 2 fonts, writing the pros and cons for each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serif fonts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What are serif fonts?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serif fonts are normal fonts that use ornamental additions to the end of a larger stroke in a letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is that simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is an example of a serif font named Song ASC Traditional Medium font<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are different types of serif fonts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Didone serif fonts – <\/strong>People consider these fonts very elegant. Didone fonts are used in aged books having a vibrating style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old-style serif – <\/strong>Printing press invented these types of serif fonts. These fonts replaced the Gothic black letters and were much easier to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transitional Serif Fonts – <\/strong>These fonts represent the change between old-style to modern serif fonts. These fonts had more weights, becoming “more” serif than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As written on Wikipedia<\/a> – Serifs originated from the first official Greek writings on stone and in Latin alphabet with inscriptional lettering\u2014words carved into stone in Roman antiquity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is believed that serif fonts appeared in 1830.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now let’s find out more about sans-serif fonts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are sans-serif fonts?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If serif fonts are fonts that use all kind of lines and symbols attached, sans-serif fonts are fonts that are not using these additions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sans means without.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is an example of a sans-serif font named 210 Namoogothic Regular font<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

William Caslon IV designed in 1816 the very first sans-serif font named Caslon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When modernism emerged, sans-serif fonts exploded and people started to use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that we know a couple of things about each font type, let the battle begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Better for print<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perfect for legal documents, books, special books, documents<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cons:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If used incorrectly, serif fonts can easily destroy designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some serif fonts are way to “accessorized” being very heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designers focus more on creating sans-serif fonts, being less options for this type of fonts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easy to read on all devices<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great for both headlines and body text<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can be used anywhere<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hard to go wrong with a sans-serif font<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plenty of options, new ones being developed each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Awesome for minimal designs<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great for looking casual<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cons:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambiguous-looking i and I<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner – TIE<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fight 2 – Price<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prices are quite similar for both types of fonts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fight 3 – Availability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried to find out how many serif fonts are there and how many sans-serif fonts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could not find a clear information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fight 4 – Font identification<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both fonts are simple to identify using font identifiers like WhatFontIs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As much as I wanted to decide the winner for the serif vs sans-serif fonts battle, I couldn’t do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both fonts are great and very similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
